"We are safer than we were before 9-11. there are people who want to harm us for what we believe in." (060810 - G.W. Bush)
No Georgie, they hate you for what you did, what you do, and what you plan to do. The imperialism story has been part of our M.O. since the Spanish-American War.
War is good for business.
IMHO - this terrorist airplane bombing plot didn't actually happen- so there is no way to know if it was "real". Our leaders have been know to jin up a few phony scares when it suited their purpose... The Caro Mighty Mac Bridge Phone plot was as phony as the Miami Warehouse Seven Who Had No Boots.
It could all be a script for as much as we know for sure. And the timing was so good for the GOP... the people who can profit from a turn in the news cycle are makin' out! Just like the way they timed the color coded terror alerts before the last election. A former British ambassador says as much today...
Cheney called Ned Lamont Alq'eida, for instance (even though 9-11 happened on GOP watch and they claim publicly to no longer be concerned with finding OBL). Handy dupe Mel Gibson raised the anti-semitism potemkin story for the Fundies to flock around after the defeat of Rove's buddy the "democracy" lovin' Joementum Liberman (who loves the voter but not their vote.)
The Northwest airline strike was put on hold (airlines always make out for some reason, maybe as quid pro quo for not publicly complaining about how lax security really is. Or thinking about it, did you notice how Congress just last week protected the airlines' pensions (along with some food companies and military contractors), but let the auto workers get swept down the creek?)
Scared in their head, frightened in their imagination, terror-manipulated sheep don't know or care about the obscene IBM pension decision last week. Wait til you see what General Motors does with that decision.
Or as Thom Hartmann suggests, the publication of the new book "Without Precedence" by Keane and Romer was the timing trigger. The 9-11 Commissioners' new book tells how the Bush Administration lied to them repeatedly about the causes and responses to 9-11. They were going to be THE interview on all the Sunday talk shows but got bumped by the hurried-up airplane bomb story.
And now on MSNBC it was reported that the British law enforcement was not ready to make the plane bombing investigation public (they wanted to collect more evidence) and that an attack was NOT IMMINENT (no tickets, no chemicals, some suspects had no passports). The Bush administration reportedly pressed to have the story released early.
Wag the dog?
Why would they do that?
Has the Lapdog press forgotten the popularity of that term?
(Also, I hope you noted that Bush and company did not uncover this plot, it was good old "law enforcement" --- POLICE --- in Britain.)
Thom Hartmann's show on the 14th was a keeper. He pointed out that the Bush choice to be a "war president" and use a half-privatized military (which he and his supporters would profit from immensely) to respond to terrorism instead of "law enforcement" was a humongous error, although I think it is criminal intent.
Bush responded to terror by tearing up our Constitution, whereas Clinton, for example, used law enforcement to defeat Timothy McVeigh.
In the military in the Bushs' first war, Timmy McV did 'clean up', bulldozing bodies on the Highway of Death, which radicalized Timmy. He came home, read the 'Turner Diaries', and was a survivalist, fundamentalist wacko who hung with Arian nation types. I've never read the book, but Hartmann described it and it gave me a chill.
Apparently the diaries are a fictional account of a terrorist act on native soil aimed at eliciting a typical blindly asymetrical response from government that would take away the rights of Americans. He wanted Clinton to overreact and come after the Fundamentalists. The good white protestant survivalist fundamentalist Christians would then rise up and kill non-whites, Catholics and Jews.
But Clinton didn't take the bait. George would have, but he will come after political liberals if he gets the chance. The courts have been set up - permanent Pentagon-run kangaroo court styled star chambers. The laws have been fixed - the Patriot acts that our rubber stamp congress voted on without reading, much less analysing. The prisons are set up - urban warfare games have been staged, stadiums are to be used as makeshift holding tanks in every state, and since troops are engaged in Iraq, private mercenaries can be hired (interesting note: the Devos family has relatives in that business.)
The star chamber is not limited to foreigners, American citizens have lost all of their legal rights of fair trials as well. And the administration has even written themselves protection from the world court in cases of torture.
It can happen to me or you. Free speech has been attacked in the past here in America, and it will be again.
New Orleans in Katrina was a dry run. Why do you think we responded to Florida hurricanes just fine, as always, but Lousiana was hung out to twist in the wind? George put Brownie in there as a straw man. Just google Brownie's recent comments on that.
All Dubya needs to bring down fascism on our heads is another "Another Pearl Harbor."
Tin hat time:
Why do I say the neo-cons might use nukes? You hear the rightwingnut pundits all over the airwaves becoming increasingly grotesque, in order to inure their followers to our nation committing horrors.
The neocons are afraid of losing political power if they try to draft middle class Americans (they have already sweetended the pot, raised the age bar and lowered the admission standards to the military), we can't afford another war on credit, the military is being stretched beyond belief, Hezbollah was not weakened by the Israeli pounding as much as they expected even with our help, Iran controls the Straits of Hormuz one way or the other, our soldiers in the Mideast are relying for their lives on fuel that can be taken out by indigenous nationalists and surprise! the Kurds are unhappy, the Shia are simmering mad, the Sunni are crazed.
Bremer-style unfettered market capitalism, in other words, chaos and no bid contracts, was a complete disaster for Iraq. They called it creative destruction but it was just devastation. You could trace the movement of bricks of lost taxpayed cash from space satellites. The only thing the neocons have left in their bag of tricks is utter brute criminality... and black box voting machines.
And today we are sending the army in to Baghdad to flatten what's left, like we did to Fallujah. That means grotesque casualties and urban warfare. Bet that'll give the world a warm feeling for us.
I'm still predicting a real "terrorist" incident before the election. October 13th would be the date I would choose, being a significant date in conspirator history. But In Sy Hersh's most article he mentions late August.
